GRAND ISLAND, Neb. – In response to the city’s growth, Grand Island is advancing efforts to provide affordable workforce housing. On Wednesday, the Grand Island Economic Development Corporation (GIAEDC) broke ground on a new housing project in the eastern part of the city. The development will feature three buildings, each containing five separate living units. For the next ten years, eight of these units will be reserved for individuals earning below 120% of the local area median income.
The project is partially funded by the Nebraska Affordable Housing Trust Fund, marking a first-of-its-kind award for Grand Island. Hoppe Development will oversee construction, and Mayor Roger Steele has expressed pride in the collective efforts leading to this milestone. The city has implemented zoning changes to facilitate such housing developments.
GIAEDC President Mary Berlie emphasized that the state award is just one part of the funding needed. With the rising costs of construction and land, the project requires collaboration among multiple partners and funding agencies to become a reality. Berlie highlighted the ongoing commercial and residential growth in Grand Island, indicating the city’s readiness for continued development.
