The Nebraska State Patrol arrested 54 individuals for driving under the influence during Husker football game days this year as part of an enhanced enforcement effort supported by two grants totaling $15,120 from the Nebraska Department of Transportation’s Highway Safety Office. The initiative allowed troopers to conduct increased patrols on roads and highways, provide aerial surveillance, and ensure security in and around Memorial Stadium during the seven home games in Lincoln.
In addition to DUI arrests, troopers issued 456 speeding citations, 16 citations for driving with suspended licenses, 19 for open alcohol containers, 12 for seatbelt violations, and eight for failing to properly secure children in vehicles. Troopers also assisted 219 motorists with mechanical issues.
The number of DUI arrests on game days this year marked a decrease from 88 arrests in 2023, which included the record-breaking Volleyball Day at Memorial Stadium. The 2024 statistics are more consistent with the 2021 season, which saw 58 DUI arrests. State Patrol spokesperson Cody Thomas praised the collaborative efforts of public safety agencies and responsible fans, urging continued caution on Nebraska roads. “On game day or any day, we urge all motorists to drive sober and watch your speed to help keep Nebraska roads safe,” Thomas said.
