The Nebraska State Patrol and Department of Motor Vehicles are warning residents about a scam involving fraudulent text messages that claim to come from the DMV. These messages, which were sent to numerous Nebraskans over the weekend, falsely state that the recipient has unpaid traffic fines and urges them to click a link to avoid penalties.
Officials say this is a phishing scam designed to steal personal or financial information. The Nebraska DMV clarified that it does not send official notices via text message. DMV Director Rhonda Lahm emphasized, “None of these text messages are legitimate.”
The scam isn’t isolated to Nebraska—drivers in other states, including South Dakota, have reported similar messages.
Col. Bryan Waugh, superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol, advised the public to stay vigilant: “Never click links or share personal information from an unsolicited message. If you’re unsure whether a message is real, contact the agency directly through trusted channels.”
