BURWELL, NE — Nebraska’s Big Rodeo has suffered another significant setback after severe storms swept through the area Thursday evening. The west grandstands—commonly known as the reserved seating section—were completely destroyed by powerful winds, leaving another gaping void at the historic Burwell fairgrounds.
This latest loss follows the destruction of the north grandstands earlier in the year, and event organizers say the damage is both physically and emotionally devastating. Photos shared by the Nebraska’s Big Rodeo Facebook page show the once-standing wooden structure now in a pile of splintered boards and debris.
In a public statement, rodeo officials expressed their heartbreak:
“This loss is just as heartbreaking as the loss of the north grandstands. At this time we ask that you please stay out of the fairgrounds unless you are a construction worker or a Board member.”
Kaci Jo Kamphaus, a community member and likely volunteer, commented:
“Feels like we just can’t catch a break. We lost the whole west grandstands tonight at the fairgrounds.”
With the 103rd edition of Nebraska’s Big Rodeo scheduled for late July, questions remain about how the damage will affect seating and event logistics. Officials have yet to release further details on contingency plans but have made it clear that safety and structural assessment are the immediate priorities.
The public is urged to avoid the area as cleanup and recovery efforts begin.
