Impaired driving continues to be one of the most serious threats to roadway safety in Nebraska, and with tens of thousands of visitors expected at the Nebraska State Fair, extra enforcement is underway. The Grand Island Police Department is partnering with the Nebraska Department of Transportation to crack down on impaired drivers.
A $25,000 grant from NDOT is funding overtime patrols, which will include both officers and drug recognition experts working extended hours to focus on DUI enforcement. The campaign runs through the duration of the State Fair and Labor Day weekend, wrapping up on September 1.
“Impaired driving is one of the most preventable causes of serious crashes and fatalities,” said Police Chief Kevin Denney. He added that the partnership with NDOT allows officers to increase their presence during one of the busiest travel periods of the year, helping to keep both residents and visitors safe.
Authorities remind drivers to make responsible decisions by planning ahead, designating a sober driver, or arranging alternative transportation to prevent tragedy on Nebraska’s roads.
