GRAND ISLAND, Neb. — The Grand Island Police Department is reminding residents to keep wallets and purses close at hand after an elderly woman became the victim of a costly theft.
Police say an 84-year-old woman reported her wallet stolen Monday while shopping at the Grand Island Hy-Vee. Division Chief Dean Elliott explained that by the time she realized it was missing, the suspects had already used her cards to make about $4,000 in purchases at the local Best Buy, including a computer and several watches.
Surveillance cameras captured images of two men believed to be involved, but police have not yet identified them. Authorities noted that the suspects left the scene in a vehicle bearing California license plates and believe they are not from the area.
Elliott described the case as a crime of opportunity and urged residents to be extra mindful of their personal belongings when out in public.
