LINCOLN — Nebraska Attorney General Mike Hilgers has filed a lawsuit against home security camera seller Lorex, accusing the company of misleading consumers about privacy risks tied to its products.
The lawsuit, filed Tuesday, claims Lorex has downplayed its ongoing ties to Dahua, a Chinese technology company that manufactures the cameras and previously owned Lorex. Federal authorities have long flagged Dahua as a security concern, labeling it a “Chinese military company” and banning its equipment from use in critical infrastructure.
Despite Lorex marketing its products as “safe and secure,” Hilgers said the company has failed to disclose Dahua’s continued involvement in both the hardware and software of its devices. According to the lawsuit, those connections pose risks such as unauthorized access to video and audio feeds, tampering with camera settings, and potential exposure of private data to foreign intelligence.
At a press conference announcing the case, Hilgers said Lorex violated Nebraska’s consumer protection laws by making deceptive claims. The state is seeking civil penalties and a court order to stop the company from marketing its products as secure without disclosing the risks.
“We’re just saying, be honest with consumers, and let the free market speak,” Hilgers said. “If people want to buy cameras knowing they could expose their families to surveillance, that’s their choice. But Nebraskans deserve the truth.”
