GRAND ISLAND, Neb. — A Grand Island man was taken into custody Wednesday morning after exchanging gunfire with Nebraska State Patrol troopers who were attempting to serve a search warrant at his home.
According to Colonel Bryan Waugh of the Nebraska State Patrol, the incident occurred around 6:40 a.m. at a residence located at 921 East Oklahoma Avenue. Troopers with the patrol’s Tech Crimes Unit were serving a search warrant as part of an ongoing child pornography investigation when the 43-year-old suspect allegedly fired a gun toward officers outside the home.
One trooper returned fire, and the suspect then barricaded himself inside the residence. After about ten minutes of repeated commands, the man voluntarily surrendered and was taken into custody without further incident.
No injuries were reported, and authorities confirmed that no one else was inside the home during the standoff.
Colonel Waugh praised the professionalism of the responding officers, noting that the situation posed a life-threatening danger to troopers. “We’re extremely thankful that nobody was injured and that all of our troopers are going home safely tonight,” he said.
The suspect is being held at the Hall County Jail, with charges pending. Two investigations are ongoing — one by the State Patrol’s Tech Crimes Unit related to the initial child pornography case, and another by Troop C, which is reviewing the officer-involved shooting.
Authorities say the neighborhood is now safe, and the scene has been fully cleared by the State Patrol’s SWAT team.
