Hall County prosecutors have filed misdemeanor charges against one adult and four juveniles following an altercation that occurred after a February 16 student walkout in Grand Island.
Hall County Attorney Marty Klein said the decision came after reviewing the investigation conducted by the Grand Island Police Department. The incident happened near West Lawn Elementary School, where students had gathered during a walkout protesting Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
According to authorities, 54-year-old Michael Brown of Grand Island shouted pro-ICE comments toward the group. Prosecutors say the situation escalated after a student threw a water bottle that struck Brown, who then got out of his vehicle and chased after the student.
Brown has been charged with third-degree assault, assault by mutual fight, and attempted third-degree assault involving a 15-year-old girl. Four juveniles, ranging in age from 14 to 17, also face assault-related misdemeanor charges connected to the confrontation. Because they are minors, their names will not be released.
Klein said the charging decisions were based on video evidence, witness statements, and officer observations. He added that all four juveniles appear eligible for diversion programs, which could allow them to avoid court and a criminal record if successfully completed.
County officials emphasized that while the First Amendment protects political expression, it does not protect violence or physical assault. As with all criminal cases, the charges are accusations, and all defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
