ORD — After a miscalculation led to a higher cost than expected, Valley County has decided to move forward with a road project.
The 811th Road sits off of Highway 11 between Ord and North Loup.
The pavement and realignment project requires a railroad crossing to be moved. The cost of this was brought to the board in March and came out to $75,243.85 for 64 feet of work. That compares to the original estimate of about $50,000 for 47 feet.
The mistake was a miscalculation by the county surveyor, Olsson Associates, out of Grand Island.
With bids awarded last fall, the board voted 6-1 to move forward with the work. This includes shifting the 811th Road toward the south to get back to its intended line and pavement work.
The hope is this will handle safety and load concerns with the intersection due to increased truck traffic with the business in the area.
The newest of these is Nebraska Distillers and they have agreed to offer $12,500 to help pay for the total cost. Olsson’s will pay $3,000 to help cover for its mistake and Valley County Economic Development is still in for $100,000.
This brings the total cost to the county to roughly $255,000.
