BURWELL — The Garfield County Sheriff’s Office took part in a DEA event to help take back unwanted prescription drugs.
Folks stopped by the courthouse to find a safe place to put pills or patches and keep them from becoming a danger.
Sheriff Larry Donner says this event really provides a service for people in the area. “Part of the big issue is folks who may have had a death in their family,” he explains. “Especially if they’ve been ill quite some time.”
“A lot of times, we’ll get a whole box and they’re strictly from somebody who has passed away,” Donner adds.
This year’s take-back was one of the the most successful for the sheriff’s office.
Once filled, the bags are tied up and sent to the DEA for disposal. Overall, nearly six million pounds have been taken back by the DEA since it started this program.
