ORD — The Nebraska Extension in Greeley, Howard, Sherman and Valley Counties hosted Central Nebraska Farm Safety Day in Ord this week.
The event had 220 kids sign-up to learn how to be responsible around ATV’s, grain bins, lawnmowers, plus how to handle rollovers, EMT calls and fire. A variety of displays showed the participants how important it was to be careful and aware.
Bev Smedra helped organize the day and says it’s not just for farm kids. “We all live in a rural area,” she explains. “They might go visit grandma and grandpa on the farm, they might visit their best friend on the farm. Just living in town, they run a lawnmower, they ride in a car they should put their seatbelt on. They might visit a friend and ride a four-wheeler.”
“We want all of our kids to be safe,” Smedra adds.
Kids from kindergarten to sixth grade took part between the morning and afternoon session. Each child received an ATV helmet for participating.
All-in-all, donations from the Farm Credit Union, Wozab Grant, Cargill, The Big Give to Valley County and local businesses plus volunteers helped make the day possible.
