Nebraska Extension hosted a Soybean Management Field Day in Ord today at the Tad Melia Farm near Ord. The field day consisted of learning about early season crop stress effects on production, insects and seedling diseases, maturity group and traits, cover crops and weed management, new herbicide formulation used on soybeans, marketing and impacts of tillage on seeding rates and soil factors affecting yields.
Nebraska Extension Executive Director of the Nebraska Soybean Board Victor Bohuslavsky says, This is a great program for farmers soybean checkoff dollars. The checkoff dollars were highlighted by research, marketing, promotion, new uses and education during the day.
Attendees were able to take away information learned such as: cover crops as part of corn-soybean rotations and as a weed management tool, assessing current market decisions, calculating projected farm program supports through 2018, common seedling diseases and how stress can impact development, determining when seed treatments are a good investment, overview of the impact and management of early season hail damage in soybeans, impact of residue cover on soil water evaporation and how to ensure good results with the new herbicide formulations.
The last two Soybean Management Field Days will be tomorrow, Thursday, August 10 in Auburn at Jim Gerdes Farm and Friday, August 11 in Tekamah at Tim Gregerson Farm.
