A Grand Island man has waived his right to a preliminary hearing in Howard County Court and has been bound over to District Court.
Jessie Scarlett, 35 of Grand Island is charged with four felonies after an accident near St Libory on July 10th that killed three adults and one unborn child. Scarlett made his first court appearance since the accident in Howard County in front of Judge Tami Schendt accompanied by his attorney Gary Peterson. The counts against Scarlett, as read by Schendt, include three counts of manslaughter and one count of unlawful death of an unborn child.
The three counts of manslaughter are Class 2A felonies that carry a maximum prison sentence of 20 years with no minimum, and the fourth charge is a Class 3A felony that carries a maximum prison sentence of three years and no minimum.
The accident in which the four were killed took place at approximately 3:30 pm on July 10th, 2019 when Scarlett reportedly failed to stop at a stop sign as he was heading East on Highway 58. A pregnant Tara Roy, 41 of Dannebrog, and Eric John, 48, of Dannebrog were traveling North on Highway 281 when Scarlett missed the stop sign at the intersection and collided with the pickup they were traveling in.
Briana Loveland, 19 of Grand Island was in the pickup driven by Scarlett and was killed in the accident as well.
