The Nebraska-Kearney track and field teams are 15th (men) and 27th (women) in the third edition of the indoor Division II National Rating Index.
The rankings are released weekly by the USTFCCCA (U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association). Schools get points based on the number of individuals ranked in various events.
The Loper men, tallying 52.60 points, have 11 times or marks in the nation’s top 30. Fremont redshirt freshman Wes Ferguson is third in the 800 (school-record 1:50.60) with Kearney sophomore Brayden Sorensen third in the high jump (6-10.25). Hastings junior Seth Simonson (10th/800; 1:51.77) also is part of the fifth ranked distance medley relay team (9:57.39).
Colorado School of Mines (170.73) vaults up six spots to number one with Grand Valley State (Mich.), Ashland (Ohio), West Texas A&M and Northwest Missouri State rounding out the top five. Finally, UNK is sixth in the Central Region behind Northwest, Missouri Southern, Pittsburg State, Minnesota State and Central Missouri.
On the women’s side the Lopers have 23.24 points thanks to eight times/marks in the top 28. McCook senior Tiara Schmidt is fourth (weight throw; school-record 63-1.50) and 12th (shot put; 46-2.75), respectively, with O’Neill true freshman Abby Everitt 15th in the high jump (5-6). Finally, the DMR team currently sits 11th (12:22.53).
GVSU (331.20), Minnesota State (203.23) and UCM (119.42) remain the top three women’s squads nationally with the Lopers still 10th in the Central Region. MSU leads with Augustana second and UCM third.
