A Thursday evening fire near Callaway threatened multiple structures and homes, but due to a quick response by multiple fire departments and aerial support saved them. According to Callaway Fire Chief Dan Trumbull, at around 5 pm Fire Crews were dispatched to multiple grass fires northeast of Callaway along the Callaway Road. According to the Fire Chief, a farm implement was travelling along Callaway Road and had unintentionally started seven small fires on the road. The fires burned south and some eventually crossed the South Loup River where the crews were able to contain it. No injuries were reported but multiple homes and a Thomas Livestock hog barn were threatened. Assisting in containing the fire were the Custer County Sheriff’s Office, Custer County Emergency Management, Arrow Aviation in Broken Bow, and Wells Air Service in Scotia. Fire departments that responded to the fire included Anselmo, Ansley, Arnold, Berwyn, Broken Bow, Callaway, Cozad, Eddyville, Lexington, Merna, Oconto, and Stapleton.
