Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney women’s tennis team ended the 2021-22 year ranked 55th in NCAA Division II with the doubles team of sophomores Melisa Becerra and Jazmine Zamorano 30th in the land. The team and individual rankings are sponsored by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). A young Loper squad went 11-10 (4-4 MIAA) this past season with the Central Region featuring nine of the nation’s top 68 teams. That included National Runner Up and third-ranked Central Oklahoma. UNK beat No. 25 Drury (Mo.) and No. 26 Harding (Ark.) in mid-February with the schedule featuring 11 Top 75 matchups and Division I Drake, Ia. (14-7, 6-0 in the Mo Valley). UNK fell to the Bulldogs by just a 4-3 score; DU won the MVC regular season league title. Becerra (Colombia) and Zamorano (Mexico) went 9-4 at number one doubles, ending the year with wins over two nationally-ranked pairs. Becerra and Zamorano went 7-1 against the MIAA and helped the Lopers post an overall dual doubles record of 35-27. Finally, the Central had eight of the nation’s top 50 doubles teams including top-ranked UCO’s Christine and Mae Canete.
UNK begins the 2022-23 season in early September.
