A Saunders County jury found Kolton Barnes guilty of murdering his fiance 27-year-old Kayla Matulka in July 2020 at their home in Malmo, NE. His was found guilty of first-murder in the brutal stabbing death where he also killed Matulka’s dog and left both of the to be found by Matulka’s young children. According to the arrest affidavit, Barnes was sentenced to life for 1st-degree murder. He was also convicted on two counts of use of a deadly weapon to commit a felony, for which he received 40-50 years for each count. Barnes will also face 2-3 years for felony charge of intentional cruelty to an animal. He also faces two one year sentences for separate negligent child abuse charges. Lastly, he faces 1-2 years in prison for tampering with physical evidence.
