Attorney General Doug Peterson announced Monday that Nebraska joined agreement to bring litigation against the pharmaceutical industry for its role in the opioid crisis. This brings the total national amount from investigations to more than $50 billion. Under the agreements CVS will pay $5 billion and Walgreens will pay $5.7 billion, for a total $10,7 billion. Nebraska will receive around $41 million from the fund and will use the settlement to funds to help with services to remediate the opioid crisis and some of these services will include prevention, harm reduction, treatment, and recovery services. The agreed upon injunctive relief that CVS, Walgreens, and Walmart will have to follow because of this agreement require that pharmacies monitor, report, and share any data they receive abut suspicious opioid prescription activity. Each state involved in this agreement has until the end of 2022 to agree. The negotiations were led by Attorney Generals from North Carolina, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Nebraska, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee and Texas.
