GRAND ISLAND, Neb. – The City of Grand Island has broken ground on a new solar farm expected to power approximately 10,000 houses in the community. This significant project, housing 21,600 panels, will become the second-largest solar farm in Nebraska.
Located on the northeastern side of town, the solar farm comes with a price tag of $14.2 million, with about $4 million funded by the Inflation Reduction Act. The new installation is anticipated to enhance capacity and provide additional power during the peak summer months.
Assistant Utilities Director Lynn Mayhew stated that the cost of solar power generation will be comparable to the city’s current coal-based method. The project is scheduled for completion by November 2024, with operations commencing before the end of the year.
