Jeffrey D. Stewart, the former manager of Norfolkâs North Fork Area Transit, was sentenced to 15 to 18 years in prison for embezzling over $740,000 from the organization. Stewart, from Harlingen, Texas, was convicted in Madison County District Court for unauthorized use of a financial transaction device exceeding $5,000 and obstruction of government operations. He must serve at least half of his sentence before becoming eligible for parole and has been credited with 417 days already served in county jail.
Court documents revealed that Stewart used a company-issued credit card for personal expenses, including charges from casinos and airlines, between April and December 2022. After the embezzlement was discovered, Stewart was suspended from his role as general manager in December 2022, and he was later arrested in Texas in July 2023.
The financial damage led North Fork Area Transit to suspend operations in January 2023, leaving many without access to transportation. The organization resumed services in April 2023 after raising $1 million to cover debts and restore operations.
