GRAND ISLAND – An Ohio man accused of a fatal stabbing on Interstate 80 has been deemed competent to stand trial. The findings of a competency evaluation for 22-year-old James Thompson Jr. were shared in Hall County Court on Tuesday afternoon, just before his preliminary hearing.
Thompson faces 11 felony charges linked to a double stabbing that occurred in June at the westbound rest stop at the South Locust exit. The charges include murder, attempted murder, assault, evading arrest by operating a motor vehicle, two counts of attempted robbery, and five counts of using a deadly weapon to commit a felony.
This incident involves the stabbing of 71-year-old Mary Weaver and her husband, 72-year-old Gary Weaver, both from Eureka, Missouri, while they were stopped at the rest area.
Judge Arthur Wetzel established probable cause, allowing the case to proceed to district court. Thompson’s arraignment is scheduled for 9 a.m. on October 22.
