COLUMBUS, Neb. — A tragic shooting in Columbus has led to the arrest of a 25-year-old man who is accused of killing his stepfather outside a Walmart on Tuesday evening.
Columbus Police were dispatched to the store on East 23rd Street just before 6:30 p.m., where they found 42-year-old Anhil David Mirabal Hernandez lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to the chest. Officers provided aid until medics arrived and transported Hernandez to Columbus Community Hospital. He was later pronounced dead.
According to Columbus Police Captain Doug Molczyk, the suspected shooter, Manuel Alejandro Mesa Cabrera, turned himself in to the Columbus Police Department later that evening. Investigators have since confirmed that Cabrera is Hernandez’s stepson.
Cabrera has been arrested and faces charges of first-degree murder and use of a firearm to commit a felony. The case remains under active investigation, and police are urging anyone with additional information to contact them at 402-564-3201.
