For the first time in nearly four decades, Nebraska football will take the field wearing red home jerseys paired with red road pants.
The Huskers teased the look on social media Thursday evening before confirming Friday morning that the all-red combination would make its return for Saturday’s game against Houston Christian. The theme ties into this weekend’s “Blood Moon,” a red-colored lunar eclipse expected Sunday night.
Head coach Matt Rhule embraced the symbolism earlier in the week, noting how cultures throughout history have interpreted the blood moon as a sign of conflict. “Those are pretty cool things, the red eclipse,” Rhule said. “The history — you go back to Asia and across the world — people saw the red or orange moon and thought a wolf or dragon was trying to eat it. It usually means a war is coming.”
Nebraska last wore a full red uniform set in 1986 against Oklahoma, a game the Huskers lost.
This won’t be the only special look this season. On November 1, Nebraska will wear its all-black alternate uniforms when it hosts USC, with fans encouraged to join the theme by dressing in black.
