Human skeletal remains discovered in October at Scotts Bluff National Monument have been confirmed as those of Chance Englebert, who had been missing since July 6th, 2019. His mother, Dawn Englebert, told the Scottsbluff Star-Herald that investigators from the Gering Police Department were trying to contact the family when news of the identification was shared on a Facebook page associated with Chance’s wife, Baylee. A family friend, Matt Miller—who operates the “Let’s Start with Chance” Facebook page and has led multiple search efforts—also confirmed the development.
Englebert disappeared while visiting relatives in Gering with his wife and their 3-month-old son. He was last seen walking near the 700 block of O Street after leaving a family member’s home following an argument. Surveillance footage later captured him near several businesses in Gering and along Terry Boulevard and Stable Club Road in Terrytown.
The remains were located on October 10th by someone walking along the north side of monument property. Multiple agencies assisted in the recovery, and family members identified personal items found at the scene as belonging to Chance. According to estimates, the location was roughly one to one-and-a-half miles from a nearby canal road accessible from Country Club Road and other points around Gering.
While the family has been informed that the death is expected to be ruled accidental, Dawn Englebert said the findings leave them with more unanswered questions. In a Facebook post, she noted that the discovery does not bring the closure they had hoped for. The Star-Herald also reached out to Baylee Englebert but has not yet made contact.
