An Ohio man accused of a 2024 murder in Nebraska remains at the Lincoln Regional Center after a judge again ruled him unfit to stand trial. Court records show 22-year-old James Thompson is charged with killing 72-year-old Gary Weaver of Eureka, Missouri, during an incident at a rest stop near Grand Island in June of last year. Thompson faces a list of charges, including murder, assault, and five weapons-related offenses.
Judge Andrew Butler reaffirmed this week that Thompson is still not competent to proceed, and his next evaluation hearing is scheduled for January 20, 2026. Thompson previously entered a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity in October of last year, and later requested to represent himself, telling the court he believed he could perform better than his public defender and even claimed he had “created the laws” governing his case.
Following those statements, Judge Butler ordered Thompson to undergo further psychiatric evaluation at the Lincoln Regional Center, where he remains under state custody.
