A Grand Island man is facing serious allegations after his newborn son was hospitalized with multiple injuries. Thirty-year-old Jovanny Garcia-Garcia was arrested over the weekend following a report from Children’s Hospital in Omaha, where the 2-week-old infant had been transferred on December 2.
According to an affidavit, a doctor contacted Grand Island police on December 4 after discovering extensive trauma. The infant was found to have six fractured ribs, additional fractures near both knees, a recent brain bleed, bleeding in the eyes, and soft-tissue neck injuries. The doctor concluded that the “totality of the injuries” indicated intentional abuse rather than an accident.
When questioned, Garcia-Garcia reportedly suggested he may have squeezed the crying baby too tightly one night or may have accidentally injured him while sharing a bed and “rolling around” during sleep.
Garcia-Garcia is scheduled to appear in Hall County Court, where he will formally face a charge of intentional child abuse resulting in injury, a felony under Nebraska law.
