A Grand Island man is facing arson-related charges after authorities say he intentionally set a fire on Southern Public Power District property, causing damage late last month. Thirty-three-year-old Michael Holman has been charged in Hall County Court with third-degree arson and criminal mischief.
According to an arrest affidavit, Grand Island Police responded just before 11 p.m. on December 26 to reports of a fire at the Southern Public Power District main office, located at 4550 Husker Highway. When officers arrived, they found a fire burning in the parking lot that had spread to melted plastic and a nearby tree. Investigators later reviewed surveillance video, which allegedly showed Holman walking through the parking lot, entering a portable toilet set up for a construction crew, and starting a fire inside.
Court documents state the fire caused an estimated $1,000 in damage to the portable toilet, along with damage to a tree and the parking lot surface at the Southern Public Power District facility.
