LINCOLN, Neb. — Nebraska lawmakers could soon be required to demonstrate their understanding of basic civics under a proposal introduced in the Legislature.
Legislative Bill 1066 would mandate that state senators complete a civics assessment within 90 days of being sworn into office. The test would be modeled after the U.S. naturalization civics exam and administered by the clerk of the Legislature.
Under the bill, lawmakers would not be required to pass the test to remain in office, and their eligibility to serve would not be affected by their score. However, individual scores would be made public, while specific test answers would remain confidential.
Senators who do not pass the assessment would have the option to participate in a voluntary civics education seminar.
