A Grand Island man critically injured in a Sunday night assault has died, according to authorities.
The victim, 41-year-old Matthew Bishop, died after suffering severe injuries in the attack. Organ donation was completed early Thursday morning.
An autopsy is scheduled for Friday, July 10.
Investigators with the Grand Island Police Department are expected to meet with the Hall County Attorney later Thursday morning to review the case and determine whether charges against the two suspects will be upgraded following Bishop’s death.
The assault occurred in the 100 block of West 3rd Street in downtown Grand Island.
Officers responded to the scene shortly before 11:15 p.m. Sunday and found Bishop unresponsive in the roadway. He was initially taken to CHI St. Francis before being transferred to CHI Bergan Mercy Medical Center in Omaha, where he remained on a ventilator while receiving treatment for life-threatening injuries.
Police said their investigation identified two Grand Island men who allegedly assaulted Bishop and left him in the street. On Tuesday, July 7, officers arrested 23-year-olds Jesus A. Reyes and Angel G. Vega. Both are being held at the Hall County Department of Corrections on first-degree assault charges.
Authorities continue to investigate the incident. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Grand Island Police Department at (308) 385-5400 or Grand Island–Hall County Crime Stoppers at (308) 381-8822.
