ST. PAUL — Howard County is now labeled livestock friendly. The Nebraska Department of Agriculture made the muncipality the 33rd county to do so. The Idea of the program is to use it as a promotional tool to encourage expansion of livestock operations.
The topic has been a source of debate. Some county officials across the state have been leary about the program because they believe each county should decide for itself whether it is livestock friendly and not leave it up to the state.
In order to earn the designation, county boards must hold a public hearing an pass a resolution to apply to the Department of Agriculture.
