LINCOLN — A ballot measure has been proposed in the Nebraska legislature to guarantee farming and ranching rights in the state’s constitution.
The amendment would prevent state officials from passing restrictions on ag technology and livestock production without a compelling state interest.
Similar measures have passed in Missouri and North Dakota with rural lawmakers saying farming needs to be protected from environmental and animal rights groups.
Critics say this could limit the state’s control over ensuring animals are treated humanely and the environment is protected.
Since this would be a constitutional amendment, it would need voter approval even if it passes in the legislature.
