LINCOLN — The Nebraska Farm Bureau Federation and the Nebraska Cattlemn Association have pledged support to a property tax relief plan being pushed by Governor Ricketts and legislative committee leaders.
Two bills have been introduced in the legislature that would tighten spending and levy limits on local governments, along with restricting the assessed growth in farm-and-ranch land property values.
“I think all of us know, full well, that Nebraskans are demanding property tax relief, we’ve heard this for a number of years,” says Senator Kate Sullivan, of Cedar Rapids. “The support of these two groups is key in building support for this tax relief package that’s going to be before the legislature.”
Sullivan chairs the Unicameral’s Education Committee.
In addition to the levy limits, school districts would see a cap on the growth rate of spending and on the amount that districts can stash in their cash reserves.
Steve Nelson of the Farm Bureau added that the bill is a step in the right direction for lifting the financial burden off farmers.
