LINCOLN — A measure has gained approval in the Nebraska Legislature that would end the state’s prohibition on meat packers owning hogs.
Nebraska was the only state to keep in-state meat packers from owning the animal.
Supporters say this is a good way to help grow the industry, which is moving at a slower rate than those in near-by states. However, opponents say it hurts the small farmer because it allows large packers to virtually control the market.
