NORTH LOUP — As the weather begins to warm, the Happy Jack Chalk Mine in Scotia gets ready to open for the season.
The group prepared for that with a fundraiser in North Loup this weekend.
A soup and chili contest was held along with a Mr. Debonair contest to raise money for the Chalk Mine’s various operating expenses. Something organizers say the community is obliged to do.
“We have a lot of fundraiseers and they’re real responsive,” says Jesslyn Weiner “The banks and the cafes and the people in the community are really responsive to helping us out.”
This was the first time the chalk mine held the cook-off, while the Mr. Debonair contest has been going on for a few years. This weekend there were six contestants competing for the crown.
