ORD — For the first time since 1989, Ord girls basketball is heading to state.
The team is the sixth seed in C-1 and meets Louisville on Thursday.
Kenton Tennal’s 24-2 Chants have a lot of youth, but that doesn’t mean a lack of experience. “They played a lot of quality minutes and a lot of big-time minutes last year and they’ve been playing all year,” the coach explains.
“Our sophomores don’t play like sophomores, they play like seniors,” he adds.
It also helps when Tennal can turn to a pair of actual seniors to anchor the squad. “Morgan (Alexander) and Kate (Grint) are great players, first of all, but they’re leaders,” he says. “They do the right things, they do it the right way and those two want to win more than anybody.”
“They want to lead those younger ones in the right direction and do a great job of it.”
Overall, the secret to Ord’s success this year may be balance. The team has three players averaging double figures and five with at least six points per game. “There’s no agendas on the team it’s just all one team, one goal.” Tennal says. “It’s been a blessing, it’s been my big relief and it’s been a lot of fun for the players and the coaches.”
Ord’s matchup with Louisville from the Devaney Center in Lincoln can be heard on KNLV this Thursday. Coverage begins at 3:15 PM on The Mighty 1060 AM and KNLVRadio.com
