LINCOLN — A measure has advanced in the Nebraska Legislature that would end enforcement of a federal law that bars people with felony drug convictions from receiving benefits like food stamps.
These individuals are currently the only people not eligible for Nebraska’s SNAP program.
Supporters say the law is un-enforceable and hurts children who rely on felons for basic needs. On the other side, opponents worry about indirectly financing drug dealers.
18 other states have already opted out of the federal law.
