BURWELL — Calamus Outfitters in Burwell was the place to go this weekend for Nebraska’s Prairie Chicken Festival.
The fifth version of the event featured guest speakers, tours of the grassland area and stargazing.
Sarah Sortum helps organize the event and says folks come from as far away as Washington D.C. and California to check it out. “A lot of people have never had a chance to see a true grassland,” she explains.
“They’re amazed at the wide open spaces and how the people here really steward that land and take care of it and cherish it,” Sortum adds.
Sortum adds that the most beneficial part of having excitement about the event is that it draws attention to the prairie chicken’s grassland environment and will, hopefully, lead to its continued protection.
