Former Valley County Sheriff Casey Hurlburt faced charges of felony insurance fraud for allegedly misrepresenting the date of a car accident to benefit from an insurance claim.
During Valley County District Court March 20th a plea agreement was reached. In this arrangement, Hurlburt was convicted of misdemeanor attempted insurance fraud and agreed to forfeit his law enforcement license effective March 20. The plea deal received the judge’s approval.
The maximum penalty for the conviction could have been, one year in prison and a $1,000 fine. However, the plea agreement stipulates that prosecutors would not seek jail time or probation. Instead, they would request a fine only, with no additional charges against Hurlburt.
Court documents allege that Hurlburt reported a personal car accident occurring in October 2022, whereas the actual date was March 2022. He purportedly attempted to claim repairs under an insurance policy taken out in April 2022, a month after the true accident date.
The investigation received assistance from the Nebraska State Patrol, in collaboration with the Nebraska Attorney General’s Office handling the prosecution.
