
Richard G. “Dick” Young of Ord, Nebraska passed away on Monday, June 29, 2026, at the Community Memorial Health Center in Burwell, Nebraska at the age of 86.
Born in North Platte, Nebraska, on July 3, 1939, Dick was the beloved son of Victor C. “Vic” and Dorothy E. (Brott) Young. He spent his formative years in North Platte, where he pursued his education, graduating from North Platte High School in 1957. A lifelong learner, he continued his studies at Kearney State College, earning a Bachelor of Science in secondary math, followed by a Master of Educational Administration from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln.
After graduating from Kearney State College, Dick began his teaching career in the fall of 1962, teaching junior high math at Harvard Public Schools in Harvard. He later moved to Omaha, where he continued teaching at Millard North Junior High in Millard Public Schools and eventually served as Assistant Principal.
In Omaha, Dick met Shirley Rossitto, and they were married on August 2, 1969. They were blessed with two children, Shawn and Shelly.
Dick transitioned from education to beginning a career in insurance sales before moving his family to Minden in 1977 to operate Young’s Shoe Store. He later became the Clerk Treasurer for the City of Minden, from which he retired in 2009.
In 2011, Dick and Shirley made their home in Ord. Shirley passed away on July 27, 2020.
Dick was a dedicated member of the Catholic faith, attending Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Ord. He was also an active participant in the Minden Rotary Club.
His passions extended to technology and sports, including football, basketball, and baseball, with an enduring love for Husker athletics.
Among his cherished memories were the 4th of July celebrations at his uncle and aunt’s lake house and his time at Grandview in Ord when he met Coach John Cook then became known as “The Old Man from Grandview”.
Survivors include his two children and spouses, Shawn and Jennifer Young of Castle Rock, Colorado and Shelly and Bob Bennett of Ord; nine grandchildren, Easton (Riley) Young, Jonas, Selah, Lucy, Gemma and Asher Young and Maddox, Maxon and Mason Bennett and brothers-in-law, Mark Messinger of McCook and Jim Rossitto of New Orleans, Louisiana; sisters-in-law, Mary (Wayne) Johnson of Manning, Iowa and Jeannene Rossitto of Omaha; and a host of loving cousins, nieces, nephews and extend family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Shirley; parents-in-law, Carl J. and Arlene Rossitto; brother-in-law, Carl A. Rossito; and sister-in-law, Pat Messinger and a host of aunts, uncles and cousins.
Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, July 24, 2026, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Ord. The Rosary will be recited at 10:00 a.m. Father Paul Colling will be the Mass Celebrant. Inurnment will be in the Ord Catholic Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to St. Mary’s Catholic School or to the Parkinson’s Foundation. Ord Memorial Chapel is assisting with the arrangements.
