Loup City Public Schools is adopting a stricter cell phone policy for the upcoming school year, implementing a phone-free school day during instructional hours.
District officials announced that beginning with the 2026–2027 school year, all students will be required to keep their phones put away throughout the school day.
The district says the change aligns with a new Nebraska law requiring schools to limit students’ use of personal electronic devices during instructional time.
Under the new policy, students may not use cell phones or other personal electronic devices during instructional hours unless the use is outlined in a 504 Plan or an Individualized Education Program, or IEP.
Students will be required to store their devices in an approved location, such as the school office, their personal vehicle, or leave them at home.
If a student is found with a cell phone or electronic device during the school day, the device will be confiscated and taken to the school office.
For a first offense, a parent or guardian must pick up the device in person at the end of the school day.
Students who repeatedly violate the policy could face additional disciplinary action, up to and including expulsion, at the discretion of school administrators.
In a statement, the district acknowledged the policy marks a significant change but said it believes the move is an important investment in students’ learning, relationships, and overall well-being. Officials also thanked families for partnering with the district to help create the best possible environment for student success.
