The Ord Police Department is responding after the Ord City Council voted to remove Flock license plate reader cameras from the city.
The department says it has spent significant time listening to residents’ concerns about automated license plate readers and data privacy.
While the department says Flock cameras are an effective investigative tool for law enforcement, it also acknowledges the technology raises complex privacy concerns that deserve a broader national conversation.
The statement goes on to say the department remains committed to investigating crime and protecting the community while respecting both public safety and individual liberties.
The City Council voted 5-to-0 in favor of removing the cameras, with one council member absent.
However, the process isn’t complete just yet.
Ord City Clerk Sandy Kruml tells Central Nebraska Today that City Attorney Heather Sikyta will now send a letter to Region 26 Emergency Management and the State to determine whether the cameras can be removed immediately or what additional steps will be required before they can be taken down.
