The Grand Island Police Department participated in the national “Speeding Catches Up With You” High Visibility Mobilization from July 27 through August 9. The effort was made possible through grant funding from the Nebraska Department of Transportation Office of Highway Safety.
The campaign focused on reducing speeding and encouraging safer driving habits through highly visible traffic enforcement. During the two-week effort, nine officers worked selective overtime patrols throughout the community, targeting speeding, seat belt violations and other traffic safety concerns.
Throughout the campaign, officers conducted 797 traffic stops, resulting in 287 citations and 535 warnings for various traffic violations. Officers also made 167 arrests for a variety of offenses encountered during enforcement activities.
As part of the campaign’s focus on impaired and unsafe driving, officers arrested 19 impaired drivers, including 16 for driving under the influence of alcohol and three for driving under the influence of drugs. Officers also made seven arrests for minor in possession of alcohol.
The “Speeding Catches Up With You” campaign is a nationwide initiative aimed at reducing speeding and preventing serious injuries and fatalities caused by traffic crashes.
The Grand Island Police Department reminds drivers to slow down, obey posted speed limits and make sure everyone in the vehicle is properly buckled up on every trip, every time.
