The Kearney City Council approved the addition of two new members to the Kearney Volunteer Fire Department (KVFD) during its meeting Tuesday, Sept. 22.
Fire Chief Seth Lunbery asked the council to confirm the appointments of Corey Moss and Haley Eutsler as KVFD firefighters. Both officially joined the department on Sept. 3.
Eutsler, a Gibbon native, is currently pursuing a degree in criminal justice.
“We are grateful Haley chose to dedicate her time to serving the community as a volunteer firefighter and we’re looking forward to having her train and grow alongside the rest of our KVFD team,” KVFD said in a social media post.
Moss is a Plattsmouth native and a senior at the University of Nebraska at Kearney, where he is studying molecular biology/pre-med. He also works as a student researcher.
Moss previously earned his EMT license through Creighton University.
The appointments were approved as part of the council’s consent agenda, which included 14 other items.
Those interested in joining the Kearney Volunteer Fire Department must complete an Application for Membership and return it to Fire Station 1 at 2211 Avenue A.
Once the application is received, the applicant is interviewed by the department’s Investigative and Review Committee, which evaluates the applicant’s qualifications and interest in serving with the department.
According to KVFD, new members must successfully complete the department’s 23-week Firefighter I course.
“Generally this course starts first part of January and ends towards the end of June. This course provides the applicant basic firefighter training and general department operations,” KVFD stated.
